Easy Air-dry

Whether you’re looking to define curls and tame frizz or encourage some texture and waves, here are my best tips for getting the most out of your air-dry routine.

First of all, you’ve got to start with the single most important product to keep your hair healthy and looking its best: leave-in conditioner. Just as you would apply moisturizer to your skin before your makeup, before you even think about that curl mousse, apply a leave-in conditioner to your mid-lengths and ends.

To Define Curl/Wave and Tame Frizz:

Layer over your favorite curl cream, mousse, gel, or a combination of these. On more humid days, you may need more hold than in the drier winter months. This takes some experimenting to find your favorite combo.

Depending on how much definition you’re looking for, adjust the amount of water in your hair before applying your styling products. For the most definition, skip the towel dry and apply your products to very wet hair, or gently squeeze the water out with your hands before applying a generous amount of product, section by section. Define curls with a wet brush or Denman brush.

If you have softer curls or more of a wave, gently towel dry with a microfiber towel to quickly absorb excess water. Apply your curl cream all over and scrunch with your microfiber towel. Flip your head over and scrunch up to the roots to get some lift and volume. While upside down, look to your left and scrunch up to the nape area. Repeat on the opposite side. Flip back up and arrange the hair as you’d like it to lay. You can play with molding your curl or fringe to the desired style. Do not break the curl cast until completely or mostly dry to avoid unwanted frizz.

To Add Texture and Emphasize Waves:

After your leave-in conditioner, spray a texture spray or sea salt spray that will help add some hold and grit to the hair.

Flip your head over and scrunch up to the roots to get some lift and volume. While upside down, look to your left and scrunch up to the nape area. Repeat on the opposite side. Flip back up and arrange the hair as you’d like it to lay. You can play with molding your curl or fringe to the desired style. Scrunch the lengths again with a microfiber towel if desired. Once dry, sometimes I will add in a texturizing paste or dry texture finishing spray to add even more grit and volume.
